Song that relates to "The Old Man and the Sea"
This song relates to the book
because of their theme and tone. The theme is a sailor in the sea. However, the
meaning of the song and book are different in my opinion. The book has Santiago
trying to redeem himself for not catching a fish in 84 days and considered
"salao," which is the worst form of bad luck. The song Tremor Christ
is about the man's alcohol and religion. "The wounded organ he left bloodied on
the shore," I am assuming is his liver. The water and ocean imagery could be a
reference to the water quality of alcohol. Religion is also part of the
book and song, as in the book, Santiago pray's to god and said, "I'll
say a hundred Our Fathers and a hundred Hail Marys But I cannot say them
now." In the song, the title and this quote, "Ransom paid the Devil...He
whispers pleasing words... Triumphant are the angels if they can...a get there first..." refers to god and the devil. These
types of prayers are usually said by Catholics for redemption after sinning;
this commitment to say them later reflects Santiago's view of himself as
sinning against the fish. It could be interpereted that the song, Tremor
Christ, was written and based off The Old man and the Sea, but I
personally think the song is about alchohol and religion.
